Utah Flood Cleanup and Restoration FAQ’s
How long until we can return to our home?
That will, of course, depend on the extent of the damage. If no structural damage has occurred, we should be able to complete moisture removal using air dryers and dehumidifiers within five days. During that time, we will repair damage to furnishings, documents, clothing, and flooring where possible. We will also coordinate with any plumbers and electricians that may be necessary to repair damaged systems.
Will my homeowner's insurance cover flood damage cleanup?
Everyone’s insurance policies are unique. Once we arrive and assess the damage, we will coordinate with your insurance company to determine their level of coverage.
Here’s a good rule of thumb: If the water damage was sudden, accidental, and came from a pipe, appliance, or other feature inside your home, your standard homeowner’s insurance policy likely protects you. But, if the water damage came from an outside source or was caused by a repair you neglected to fix, you may not be covered. However, there are exceptions. If you live in a flood plain, you must have flood insurance, which should provide excellent coverage.
Can standing water be removed with a dehumidifier?
Standing water requires physical removal. The easiest way is with an industrial vacuum extraction tool. While you can attempt to remove it yourself with buckets, mops, or a small shop vac, professional flood remediation companies like ours have tools that make the job much easier and faster. Following water removal, we’ll also handle dehumidification to prevent mold and mildew.
Can walls that have been damaged by water be saved?
It depends. Some water damage to walls can be dried out using air movers and dehumidifiers. We can correct the damage by drilling holes in the drywall and removing moisture inside the wall cavity. If mold has reached the drywall, however, it may need to be replaced. We’ll take care of hauling away materials that can’t be salvaged.
Can our floors be remediated after flood damage?
Some floors can be saved. Floors made of natural wood may be able to be dried out (as can carpets and the padding beneath them) if the water absorption is not too extensive. Laminate and vinyl flooring often need to be replaced entirely. We’ll assess the level of damage your floors have faced and let you know whether or not they can be restored.
Can we live in our home after a flood?
Whether or not your home will be liveable after a flood depends on the extent of the damage—most especially, how it impacted the various systems in your home. Water damage can wreak havoc on sewer, electricity, and water systems. While fire may seem like the last thing possible in your home, electrical wiring exposed to extensive water damage can be a recipe for an electrical fire. Rapid mold growth can also create a respiratory hazard. Our flood remediation experts at The Disaster Company will help you understand whether your home will be habitable following our initial flood cleanup and restoration.
Can The Disaster Company rehab personal items that have been damaged by water?
Yes, we can often recover irreplaceable items that have water damage. We employ different processes depending on the items, such as dry or foam cleaning, to preserve your cherished possessions.
